Three Poems
(1) Channeling
A poem with terza rima should be jaunty
When one is channeling Alighieri, Dante.
A poem should a mystical turn take
When one is channeling William Blake.
A poem should be metaphysical fun
When one is channeling John Donne.
A poem will surly and befuddled seem
When one is channeling . . . Jim Beam.
(2) Water Poem
O
Dew you not know
That ambrosial eau
Or living water
From a bub-bub-bubble-ing spring
Or a bab-bab-babble-ing stream
Water, cool clear water,
Can so slake the thirst
With a refreshment so utter
As to cause a salubrious shudder.
(3)High Seas
If —
The ocean
Was first only a notion
That was ably unfurled
By the Poet of the World,
Then —
Rejoice in high seas, in abalones,
In coral reef and kelp frond leaf,
In seashell, shoals, and buoy bell tolls,
In whales, mermaid tails, and schooner sails,
Abide in the roar and spray of the tide
And laud ever after with aquatic laughter.
